Guy's Urban Walk, Auckland, New Zealand - 2001

A rather damp Sunday didn't damper the spirits of the 15 walkers that headed out around Guy's Urban Walk at 10.15am on Sunday, 28 October 2001.

From Guy's old flat in Ponsonby, we headed to the Mt Eden rock wall (where he climbed) then via AUT in Symonds Street (where he worked) via Queen St and Karangahape Road (where he was seen in that blue 70's trouser suit partying very hard!) and back along Ponsonby Rd past his building bits in the park, the pool hall, the fish'n'chip shop, a couple of bars and cafes and shops he frequented and then back to Lincoln Lodge (aka 78 Lincoln Street) for a bbq lunch and few beers (BYO food and beverages!)…"

The 'Group A' walkers motored around in under two and a half hours and managed to avoid the clearance sales, Borders bookstore and too many diversions – their focus remained on getting into the bbq and beers at the after-match function.

And they were well into that by the time the 'Group B' walkers stumbled in just before 3pm!

We were delighted to have Guy's mum (Jill White) join us from the Wairarapa and the Group B walkers made sure she saw and tasted as much of Guy's old lifestyle as possible…. coffees, a jug of Speights beer, Burger King burgers, her first ever munch-out on sushi, a guided tour of Body-Tech gym facilities, flying fox trips in Western Park and lots of puddle splashing were just some of the things she got involved in along the way…

And our sponsorship pledges totalled $NZ4,085 on the day…(and that's before we go back and ask the sponsors to pay a 25% 'wet weather' allowance…)
